Contact lenses
Contact lenses can be an alternative to glasses. They are comfortable and convenient depending on your life style. They can be a practical alternative for some sports.
Technological advances mean that contact lenses choices are numerous and easy to wear depending on your needs. We supply and fit lenses from a range of companies.
First time contact lens wearers are assessed for suitability. Your needs and lifestyle are discussed to fit you with the most suitable lenses.
We teach you how to apply and remove lenses before you get some trial lenses. New and existing contact lens wearers are advised on care routines. Regular after care and annual checks are discussed.
Modern contact lenses are very safe providing you follow the optometrist’s advice on aftercare and have regular check-ups to assess the health of the eyes.
Myopia Management
Myopia is when you are short-sighted – you can see things that are near you but objects that are far away are blurry.
Myopia control contact lenses are a specially designed contact lens used to slow the progression of short-sightedness. Myopia control lenses can be fitted to children of all ages, and are particularly important to consider when myopia starts at a young age, is showing signs of progressing and there are other risk factors (eg myopic parents).
There are 2 types of contact lenses available – soft contact lenses worn during the day and over-night contact lenses – called ORTHO-K, worn over-night so you don’t need to wear anything during the day.
ORTHO-K
Ortho-K or Orthokeratology is a way of wearing contact lenses overnight to correct your vision during the day. Custom designed overnight contact lenses are worn while you sleep and then removed each morning resulting in clear natural vision all day long. Ortho-K has been around for several decades. With the development of modern instruments it has become more popular as the accurate measurements that we can now obtain can be used to create precisely manufactured, personalised contact lenses.
Ortho-K is ideal for
Children- Ortho-K contact lenses are worn only at home and at night and provide clear daytime vision without the inconvenience of day time contact lens wear. Research has shown that Ortho-K can be effective in myopia control, to slow the progression of shortsightedness.
Sports enthusiasts-Wearing a night time contact lens removes the risk of damaging or losing glasses or contact lenses while involved in physical activity. Ortho-K lenses are ideal for those engaged in water sports and contact sports.
Allergy sufferers-Allows glasses free vision even during hayfever season.
Dry eye sufferers-Ortho-K lenses avoid the discomfort that can sometimes be caused by day time contact lenses.
How does it work?
Ortho-K corrects short-sightedness (myopia) which is a condition where the eye is effectively too long and images focus in front of the retina causing blurred distance vision. Ortho-K lenses are custom made to your prescription and cornea shape. They gently flatten the cornea by less than a hair’s width so that, on removal, rays of light coming into the eye focus correctly on the retina. To maintain this effect the lenses must be worn each night
Sports and Physical activities
Contact lenses are ideal for most sports, except for water sports due the risk of infections which can contribute to sight loss.
